Department Profile

The department of Mechanical Engineering at B.V.C Engineering College was established in the year 1997. The B.Tech. (ME) Program was duly approved by the AICTE and Government of Andhra Pradesh and affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad. 8 batches of students have been graduated so far.

Prof. A. Rama Krishna, a Dynamic Personality with a vast teaching and academic experience is working as Head of the Department. The department is also supported by Prof. G.V.N.S.R Ratnakar Rao and Prof. DSV Prasad, who have more than one decade of academic experience in premier institutions. The department has 13 teaching Faculty, maintaining 1:15 Staff: Student ratio. In the team, there are 1 Ph.D, 1 Ph.D (pursuing) 6 M.Techs, 3 M.Tech (Pursuing), 2 BTechs.

Department Objective:

To create employable and entrepreneurial engineers with academic excellence, positive attitude, communication & interpersonal skills, good character, self confidence and leadership qualities and who are useful to the Family, Society and Nation.

Department Goals:

Long Term:

Place teaching / tutorial material of each subject on the Net to enable students to browse at their own place of learning.

  • To upgrade the laboratories towards research activities.
  • To equip the department as a Centre of Excellence for Energy Systems Engineering.

Short Term:

  • Motivate all the faculty to adopt the latest techniques in teaching and learning process.
  • Encourage the II & III year students to undergo industrial training for 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Encourage the II, III & IV year students to present papers in students’ paper Presentation contests.
  • Encourage Teaching and Technical Staff to pursue the higher education.
  • Motivate and encourage each faculty to present / author a technical paper / book in a year.
  • Plan for 100% placement and Higher education

Achievements:

Academic:

Students of Mechanical Engineering are doing reasonably well in the University examinations. A good number of students are taking up competitive examinations like GATE, GRE, CAT, TOEFL etc.

Many a number of students have appeared / qualified in a GATE / CAT/ GRE / TOEFL / Central / State services through competitive examinations.

Placements:

All the Alumni of the department are well placed in various professions. A good number of Students were selected in the Campus Interviews by leading companies like NTPC, HPCL,GE HEALTHCARE, TCS, SATYAM, GE AVIATION, INFOSYS, WIPRO, SYNTEL, HAL, VIZAG STEELS, HINDUSTAN SHIP-YARD etc. Some of the Students are pursuing higher studies.

Major Activities of the Department:

Mechanical Engineering students Association (MESA)

The Department has implemented the following innovative practices for the betterment of students.

1. MESA, The technical association of the department conducts Extra & Co-Curricular activities to improve their soft skills

2. Guest lectures are being organized on Ethics and Moral values.

3. Guidance for Academically weak students.

4. Short-term Training Programs on Computer Aided Design and manufacturing Technologies.

5. Student Counseling is being done regularly.

6. The students are encouraged to participate in Seminars/Symposiums by Paying T.A. to the participants.

7. Students are guided to prepare working models.

8. Industrial Visits for Students.

Personality Development Programs:

Personality Development courses are conducted every semester for Final and Pre-Final Year students in entire year Personality Development courses helps our students in facing interviews and in securing placements.

Cultural Activities:

The students are motivated to participate in various cultural activities conducted at inter departmental level and inter institutional level. Every year cultural events are organized in our college during the college annual day.

Industrial Visits:

The coaching offered in the classroom has been purely theoretical which in long run prove to be less effective. Visits to a wide range of industries and Technical Exhibitions are regularly arranged to keep the students abreast of the recent developments in the mechanical field.

Seminars and Faculty Development Programs:

1. One day National Technical symposium “Resonance 2K8” 8th March. 2008 organized by B.V. C Odalarevu.

2. A national level workshop on “Computational Fluid Dynamics: Basics & Applications” 5th & 6th April 2008.

3. One day National conference “Resonance 2K7 “29 th Jan. 2007 organized by B.V. C Odalarevu.

4. One day work shop on SYNERGY,” how to make the students IT industry ready on 5th Jan ’07.

5. A Two day National Conference “TECHNO XTREME 2K5 18th & 19th March 2005 organized by BVC

Continuous Evaluation:

Staff members give periodical assignments and tutorials to ensure that the students are up to date. As per the regulations of the University, 2 subjective tests & 2 online tests are conducted during each semester, each for a duration of 1 ½ hour & 20 min respectively. Best 3 tests are considered for the award of Sessional Marks. Preparatory Grand Tests are conducted at the end of each semester. Students whose progresses were not satisfactory are counseled by the concerned teachers / HOD.

Soft Skills:

In the regular time-table, periods are allocated for the developing of Communication Skills – (I) Seminars, (ii) Group discussions, (iii) Personality Development, (iv) Extra-curricular Activities, (v) Ethics (vi) Career Development etc. The Auditorium / Seminar hall is allocated for each department for half-a-day in a week towards conducting Seminars and Group Discussions. Expert Lectures from Specialists of the Industry and Academic Institutions are also arranged. Documentation is maintained for all events.

Teaching Aids:

Teaching aids such as LCD Projector, OHP, CD demo, equipment demonstrations, Models, Charts etc are regularly used to enhance better understanding.
